Benefits of Therapeutic Medical Massage

Centuries of global massage practices have brought about wide acceptance to the medical applications that exist today. Hospitals, eldercare facilities, mental healthcare practitioners, professional athletic associations, and so many more all recognize the impressive array of physical, mental, and emotional benefits that coincide with receiving massage.  The massage response includes a greater sense of calm, perspective and clarity as specific physiological and chemical changes course through the system creating profound effects.

Massage reduces the effects of stress.

Primary Care Physicians see many patients with stress related complaints such as headaches, neck pain, eyestrain, poor concentration, anxiety, depression, irritability, anger, high blood pressure, heart disease, ulcers, as well as physical and emotional exhaustion.

Massage therapy activates your body’s nervous system. When your body’s parasympathetic nervous system is activated, it counteracts your body’s negative response to stress, relaxes muscle tension and allows your heart rate, blood pressure and circulation to return to normal.

Massage Therapy also helps you become more aware of your body and unconsciously held tension. As you become aware of your body, you will begin to recognize tension building and you can consciously release it before it has a negative effect on your body.

Massage for Chronic Pain.

Massage therapy can temporarily block chronic pain signals from reaching the brain. It stimulates endorphins (the body’s natural painkiller) into the brain and nervous system to reduce the feeling of pain and discomfort.

MASSAGE CAN IMPROVE NERVE FUNCTION.

Contracted muscles can press on or pinch your nerves causing tingling, numbness, or pain.  Massage therapy relaxes these contracted muscles to relieve the compression on your nerves.  Sensory receptors in the skin and muscles wake up and bring new awareness to areas that have felt cut off by chronic tension patterns.

MASSAGE STRENGTHENS THE IMMUNE SYSTEM.

The lymphatic system is a major factor in your body's battle to ward off infection and heal injuries.  The lymphatic flow can be very sluggish.  Massage therapy not only improves the circulation of blood and its nutrients, but also increases the circulation of lymph in your lymphatic system thus helping your body to fight off infection and speed your recovery from illness or injury.

MASSAGE RELAXES TENSE MUSCLES.

Muscles can become tight and ineffective for many reasons. Stress, Injury, poor circulation, overuse and misuse can all cause pain and discomfort as well as restrict your normal range of motion. Massage therapy stretches and loosens tight muscles and connective tissue, breaking down and preventing further formation of adhesion, increasing range of motion and reducing the dangers of fibrosis (process by which inflamed tissue becomes scarred).

MASSAGE INCREASES BLOOD CIRCULATION.

Like a sponge that has been squeezed, a tight muscle cannot hold much fluid nor can it allow much fluid to pass through it.  This decreases your circulation and increases the strain placed on your heart.  This can leave you feeling fatigued and sore, reducing your energy.

Massage therapy releases contracted muscle and pushes venous blood towards the heart, thus easing the strain on your heart.  This increase in circulation brings nutrients and oxygen to your cells and also carries away metabolic waste products that can make you feel listless and drained.
